“China Cotton” Sustainable Production Standard Officially Implemented

On April 1, the “China Cotton” sustainable production group standard was officially implemented, which is the first domestic cotton sustainable production standard.
According to CCTV reports, the “China Cotton” sustainable production group standards mainly include key content such as sustainable cotton production, resources and environmental protection, quality and traceability, and occupational health and safety.

Different from the technical standards for pure cotton production, in the sustainable production process, the standards pay more attention to the management and use of pesticides, fertilizers, plastic films and other chemicals in the production process; in the resources and environmental protection process, more attention is paid to water, soil health, biodiversity conservation and greenhouse gas emission reduction.

It is reported that in the last cotton year, my country produced nearly 90,000 tons of lint cotton in accordance with sustainable production specifications, and better safeguarded the interests of my country’s cotton farmers and textile industry practitioners through its own sustainable projects and standards.

As we all know, since 2020, the U.S. government has frequently restricted the import of cotton-related products from Xinjiang by means of issuing Xinjiang-related supply chain reports, listing entities, and issuing import bans. It has seriously damaged the reputation of Xinjiang and even my country’s cotton textile industry.

In December last year, the U.S. Biden administration signed the so-called “H.R. 6256 Xinjiang-related Act” passed by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to exclude Xinjiang products from entering the U.S. market. of great indignation. In this regard, the China National Textile and Apparel Council and China National Garment Association and other 12 industry associations in the entire textile industry chain of China jointly issued a solemn statement: calling for the correction of wrong legislative and administrative measures as soon as possible, respecting the legitimate rights and interests of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and China’s textile industry, Respect the free choice rights of more than 7 billion consumers around the world, resist obvious malicious and unfair trade bullying, and avoid politicizing business issues.

In fact, as the world’s second largest cotton producer, largest cotton importer and textile producer, my country, from cotton fields to clothing, has provided the world’s people with a wealth of clothing ranging from high quality and low prices to high-end fashion through participation in the global division of labor and collaboration. Selection has become an important part of the current global textile industry chain.

Xinjiang, as an advantageous production area for cotton production in my country, has an annual cotton output of about 5 million tons. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Xinjiang’s cotton production will account for 89.5% of the country’s total in 2021, ranking first in the country for more than 20 consecutive years in terms of total cotton production, unit yield, planting area and commodity allocation.

At present, Xinjiang has formed a cotton industry system that integrates cotton production, service, circulation, processing, and sales. In recent years, Xinjiang’s cotton production scale and mechanization have progressed rapidly. Precision seeding, drip irrigation under film, drone spraying, and cotton harvesting machine harvesting have greatly reduced the labor intensity of cotton farmers and improved agricultural production efficiency. .

In 2021, the machine-picking rate of cotton in Xinjiang will be as high as 87.9%, and the average net income of cotton farmers is expected to exceed 1,500 yuan/mu, becoming the main source of income for local farmers in Xinjiang, especially in southern Xinjiang Hotan, Aksu, Kashgar, Kezhou and other Uighur-inhabited areas. source, solve the local employment of about 600,000 people in Xinjiang.

According to the latest survey results of the China Cotton Association: In 2022, my country’s cotton planting area will be 43.176 million mu.

In terms of sub-regions, the planting area of the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin tends to be stable, and the intended area of Xinjiang cotton area increased by 2% year-on-year. At present, all localities are increasing scientific and technological services to ensure the smooth progress of cotton spring planting.

The “China Agricultural Outlook Report” has previously predicted that in the next 10 years, China’s cotton yield will be generally stable and its quality will continue to improve.
