Footwear can make or break a workout.Try running in hiking boots – not only will you be embarrassed (and probably much slower), but you’re more likely to get injured.On the other hand, if you put on some bike-specific shoes on your next ride, they clip onto the pedals, and you’ll be more efficient on your bike and work your muscles more effectively than wearing regular sneakers.
While the focus of fitness shoes often revolves around shoes, the socks you wear can also affect your workouts and the comfort and health of your feet.
Dr. Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist for the Progressive Foot Care and a colleague with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, said it’s important to consider these six attributes of socks.
Working out is never fun when your feet are sweaty.In addition to being uncomfortable, sweat in socks can be a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria.To combat this, look for sports socks that wick moisture away from your feet, says Dr. Pink.”Keeping feet relatively dry can help reduce common foot conditions such as toenail fungus (onychomycosis), warts and athletes’ feet (tinea pedis/tinea pedis).”
Dr. Pinker recommends a combination of cotton and polyester.”Ideally, it’s best to choose socks that are 65 percent cotton and 35 percent polyester. The synthetic polyester material helps draw moisture away from the foot to keep it relatively dry,” he shares.
Other sock materials he says work well include rayon and nylon (both synthetic), and silk and wool (both natural).”The price of stockings and wool socks can be relatively high, so some people may not be able to buy them. Wool socks are the first choice for many hikers to hike,” Dr Pinker said.Wool is also good at regulating skin temperature.
Some high-end sports socks may also have silver fibers woven into the fabric.Silver acts as an antibacterial agent and therefore reduces odor.
Most sports socks provide some compression, but there are some that are specifically designed to provide compression.Compression stockings are commonly used for recovery workouts and typically extend below the knee, providing gradually increasing pressure along the calf, increasing toward the top.
A small study involving male runners found that wearing compression socks during the 5K time trial resulted in a greater decrease in performance in the 5K time trial one hour later, compared to runners who did not wear compression socks in the first 5K. less (and overall better).The researchers speculate that this improvement is due to improved oxygen delivery, reduced muscle oscillations and/or superior running mechanics from wearing compression stockings, as well as potential psychological benefits.
Another review concluded that wearing compression socks slightly improved fatigue time, running economy (including biomechanical variables), blood lactate clearance, perceived exertion, maximal voluntary isometric contractions, and peak leg muscle strength immediately after running , and reduce muscle damage markers and inflammation.
The right sock cut depends on the type of exercise you’re doing.For activities like hiking or trail running, for example, the higher the sock, the better because it protects your skin from ticks, thorns, and grit on the trails.A taller sock is also good for outdoor riding, as it keeps chain grease and road grime kicked out by the wheels from sloughing off the skin.
For activities like walking, running, weightlifting, and general gym workouts, cutting back is more of a matter of personal preference.Socks may be preferable if you tend to overheat, but you want something that sticks out above the upper and stays in place to avoid slipping, chafing, and blistering.
Increased arch support may be beneficial for people whose feet are prone to soreness or simply prefer the feeling.”Arch support isn’t a necessity, but it can add comfort,” says Dr. Pinker.”This can be found in high-priced socks like Bombas.”
Socks with arch support are especially helpful for running, hiking, walking, sports like tennis or basketball, weightlifting or strength training, and weight-bearing activities like using the elliptical machine or climbing stairs.The added pressure supports the small muscles in the foot, preventing fatigue and excessive flattening of the arch on impact.
The ideal thickness of sports socks depends not only on the type of exercise you’re doing, but also how roomy the shoes you’re wearing.”The width of the shoe should be snug but not too tight, and the distance from the end of the longest toe to the end of the shoe should be 3/8 of an inch,” Dr. Pinker said.
In addition to fit considerations, the ideal sock thickness is a matter of preference.For example, many hikers and skiers prefer thick socks to add warmth to their boots.Some people prefer thicker socks with more cushioning for high-intensity activities like running.However, keep in mind that thicker socks are usually warmer and may also make it harder to breathe.As Dr. Pinker says, “Thick socks can cause excessive sweating, so socks must be selected specifically for the intended activity and worn comfortably in the required footwear.”
Dr. Pinker says to skip the old-fashioned cotton sports socks: “They’re not ideal, and they don’t draw moisture from your feet.”
Otherwise, the best socks for your workout are largely a matter of personal preference.If you find that your current sports socks make your feet sweaty, hot, cold, itchy, tired, or prone to blisters, try different brands and models until you find one that keeps your feet comfortable and dry.
